So, Friday I flew back down to the Gulf, to Houma. I got off the plane in New Orleans and drove the hour to the command center. It’s a big building with a lot of people not doing much of anything aside from eating and existing in air conditioning… must be nice. Anyway. I finally was able to put faces with names for some people, like my supervisor and the data coordinator, so that was nice. They gave me an assignment, well, basically told me to go get FRAT gear and head to my hotel, where I stayed for two days, but, it had a Sonic in the parking lot, so that was a plus. On Sunday morning, I was told they have another assignment for me, but it wasn’t until 2PM I was called for a meeting. I met with Mark from last time and two girls. We were being sent to Port Arthur and Galveston to do some soil sampling. Galveston would take one day, and Port Arthur two. Guess who got to go to Galveston? Yep. And I told myself I’d never go there because it was man made and has sunk like 4 times, but there I was, heading to Galveston. The drive wasn’t all that bad, long. Oh, and I saw an Exxon station that Mark had drilled for, so that was cool, and the hotel was on the beach. Even if the beach was the size of the bay-campus beach, and was meant as the town’s public beach. So, in Galveston, Tiffany and I had to go to this ship yard to do soil sampling for a BP Decon station, took us until about noon, then we drove to Port Arthur, which was only two hours and not that bad. Met up with Mark and Amy and the next day, today, started collecting samples from another shipyard. IT was like 101 this afternoon and I was filling 4 oz jars with loose dirt and sweat was pouring off me. Tomorrow we finish up the site and drive back to Houma. Mark leaves Saturday, so another easy night tomorrow and then hopefully a FRAT mission involving water? That’d be great.
